Gear Cutting Ceremony in Bali


Ceremony Mesangih or also known as Mepandes  ceremony is part of the ceremony Manusa Yadnya.  This ceremony is intended to eliminate the six enemies of human beings, among them are Kama (lust), Loba (greedy), Krodha (angry), Mada (drunk), Moha (confused), and Matsarya (envy). Six enemy is called Sad Ripu.

Sources of literature regarding the dental cutting ceremony is Lontar Pati Kala, Kala Tattwa, Semaradhana, and Sang Hyang Yama. In Lontar Pati Kala mentioned that cutting teeth as a sign of change in the status of a person becomes a true man of righteous and holy man so that later in life if die world to meet with the spirit of the ancestors in heaven.
Lontar Kala Tattwa mention that Bhatara Kala as the son of Lord Shiva with Goddess Uma could not meet with his father in heaven before the fangs cut. Therefore, man should obey the trail Bathara time that the spirit can meet with ancestral spirits in heaven.
In Lontar Semaradhana called that Bethara Gana as another son of the god Shiva to defeat the Giant NIlarudraka that attack using a piece of paradise with its fangs. Also mentioned that Bethara Gana born of the Goddess Uma after Lord Shiva was woken from yoga by Dewa Asmara (Semara) but then punish the god Siva Semara with his wife, Lady Ruth, by burning it to ashes. Then spread the ashes into the world and to condemn human can not live without in pairs (male-female) in a husband and wife.
In Lontar Sang Hyang Yama is mentioned that the ceremony may be performed if the tooth slices child reaches adulthood, characterized by menstruation for women and for men's voices swell. Usually this comes at a time when the age of 14 years.

In the ceremony, human teeth are not really cut it just touched with a chisel as symbolic only.
